The legend set to music tells of Orpheus, a demigod who tamed wild animals with his lyre-playing and heavenly singing and whose pleas were heard even by the underworld, from which he set out to rescue his beloved Eurydice. An early Baroque opera based on Greek legends, it was probably the first opera to survive in its entirety.
